Biography

Dr. Hossam Tayeb is Associate Professor of Biotechnology and Nanomedicine and Director of the Center of Innovation in Personalized Medicine at King Abdulaziz University in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. His research sits at the intersection of nanotechnology, biotechnology, and patient-centered medicine. He earned his PhD from the Australian Institute for Bioengineering and Nanotechnology, the University of Queensland, Australia, where he developed sophisticated and tunable lipid nanoformulations for medical applications spanning cancer therapy, dermatology, and vaccines. Much of his work has focused on surface tuning and engineering to suit different routes of administration and medical applications. After returning to Saudi Arabia, he joined the Faculty of Applied Medical Sciences at King Abdulaziz University as an Assistant Professor in Biotechnology and Nanomedicine, and became a founding researcher at the Center of Innovation in Personalized Medicine. At CIPM, Dr. Tayeb established an advanced Nanomedicine Unit for the production of lipid nanoparticles, enabling the development of nanovaccines, nanobiotics and antimicrobial therapies, nanocosmeceuticals, and anti-cancer treatments. The unit’s research and innovation output led to multiple patents and high-impact publications, and Dr. Tayeb was appointed as Vice Director of the Center before being promoted to Director. He was also promoted to Associate Professor in recognition of his research and academic contributions.

NanoSphere: Tell us a bit about yourself—your background, journey, and what led you to where you are today. 

Hossam: My journey began in the lab, working on lipid nanoparticles at the Australian Institute for Bioengineering and Nanotechnology. I was fascinated by how a small change in formulation could transform a drug’s behavior in the body: where it goes, how it is released, and how the immune system responds.

A central theme of my work has been surface tuning and engineering to suit different routes of administration and medical applications, whether the goal is targeted cancer therapy, enhanced vaccine delivery, topical dermatological treatments, or antimicrobial systems.

When I returned to King Abdulaziz University, I saw an opportunity to build something that connected that fundamental science to real patient needs. I helped establish the Nanomedicine Unit at the Center of Innovation in Personalized Medicine, and over time our work grew from research papers to patents and translational projects.

Becoming Director of CIPM was not just a career step; it reflected a shift in how I see my role, from someone who designs nanoparticles to someone who designs systems that turn science into impact.


NanoSphere: How has your view of innovation evolved from conducting research to leading a Center of Innovation in Personalized Medicine?

Hossam: Early in my career, I measured innovation by experiments and publications. Now I measure it by how quickly a good idea can reach a patient, a clinic, or a partner who can scale it.

Leading CIPM has taught me that innovation is less about a single breakthrough and more about building a pipeline: identifying unmet medical needs, matching them with the right technology, protecting intellectual property, and finding the right clinical or industry partner. The science must be excellent, but the system around it must also work.


NanoSphereWhat strategies have you found most effective for bringing researchers, clinicians, industry, and regulators together around a common goal?

Hossam: The most effective strategy is to start with a shared problem, not a shared technology.

Researchers, clinicians, industry partners, and regulators all speak different languages and operate on different timelines. If the conversation starts with “here is my nanoparticle,” the room splits. If it starts with “here is a patient problem we all want to solve,” people lean in.

At CIPM, we try to create early, low-risk spaces for these groups to interact: joint workshops, small pilot projects, and co-supervised students. We also make sure that intellectual property, regulatory pathways, and commercialization are part of the discussion from the beginning, not afterthoughts.


NanoSphere: If there’s one key message or insight you’d like to share with readers about the future of nanomedicine, what would it be?

Hossam: “The next frontier in nanomedicine is not making smaller particles, but engineering smarter surfaces that match the disease, the route of administration, and ultimately the patient.”
